Gym Dedicated to Kay Yow

Story by Lindsey Chester | November 11, 2009 | Tags: ,

The Town of Cary will honor former Cary resident and nationally acclaimed women’s basketball coach, Kay Yow, by dedicating the gymnasium court in her honor on Saturday, November 14, at 11:30 a.m. at the Herbert C. Young Community Center on 101 Wilkinson Ave.  In December 2008, Kay Yow served as the official tree lighter for the Town of Cary’s holiday tree lighting ceremony.  At that time, the Cary Town Council surprised Coach Yow by announcing that the gymnasium court in the Herbert C. Young Community Center would be named Kay Yow Court in her honor.  The court is now painted with its new logo and community members are invited to gather to dedicate the court in honor of Coach Yow’s legacy.

Prior to the official dedication ceremony, former NC State player and coach alumnus Jenny Palmateer will lead a basketball clinic for 125 girls aged 8-16.  Registration has closed for the clinic.  Palmateer will be joined by many of  Yow’s former players who are helping with the clinic.  Part of the ceremony will feature special speakers and a celebration of Yow’s contributions to her community.  The dedication ceremony is open to the public.
