Cary, NC – You’ve probably heard the Southern Old Wives Tale: “If it thunders in the winter, it will snow within 10 days”. Well you won’t have to wait that long in Cary to have a snow day.
The Town of Cary is teaming up with Snow My Yard to produce a snow day for all of us this weekend at Bond Park. The town has dubbed this event “Winter Wonderland” and may become part of an annual event.
ABOUT THE EVENT
The Big Spillway Hill across from the Boathouse will be covered in 30 tons of snow. Two areas will be provided for sledding- one area for smaller children with their parents and another for older kids. Beginning at 10am Saturday and continuing through Sunday, each day will host three sledding sessions for 2 hours. Folks should bring their own sleds, although there should be about 20 for rent from Snow My Yard.
HOW IT STARTED
Event Organizer and Park Supervisor, Bill Eucher says the event evolved from the request last Spring from a family to use the area for a snow party provided by Snow My Yard. That event went very well even in April keeping 30 kids happy playing in the man-made snow. Bill decided to request from the Town if such an event could be organized for the public, and “Winter Wonderland” was born.
SOLD OUT
The town began registering attendees in late December and sold all 600 tickets at the reasonable price of $10 each, and has generated a wait list. So unfortunately, if you haven’t purchased tickets already, you will not be able to participate this year. But you can still swing by Bond Park and see the magic of a snowy day right here in Cary. Bill states that if this weekend fairs well, it should become an annual event.
YOU CAN SELL ICE IN THE WINTER
Snow My Yard began as an idea for partners Brian and Jason Turner to keep their ice business , Greater Raleigh Refrigeration and Ice, busy during the slow winter months. They purchased machinery to grind large blocks of ice into snow about 2 years ago, and have been making snow ever since. A big part of their business is supplying snow for backyard birthday parties. At prices starting at $575 for 3 tons of snow, that sounds like a whole lot of sledding fun! With temperatures last week barely staying above freezing, we were all wishing for a few snowflakes. We’ll see how we do Saturday when daily temps are back to normal hovering around 50 degrees.

Yes, Bruce, we make snow in Cary. And when we get 6″ of the real stuff (happens about once every five years), the entire infrastructure is paralyzed.
Have a good visit in Sanford. Stop by and visit Cary if you get a chance

Is the snow my yard in Bond Park on Jan 30, 31? Or was it last weekend – just saw in Southwake Newspaper but see two conflicting dates online events and blogs. Looks like original date was last weekend, but reschedule date is 30,31.
