Cary, NC — Yesterday, a sewer overflowed into Walnut Creek near the 1100 block of Buck Jones Road. Today we know why.

The Town of Cary is reporting that a manhole lock was jimmied and a 5-gallon paint bucket shoved into the 8-inch sewer line.

The spill was reported by a citizen around noon on Tuesday.  Very early estimates suggested that the spill may have been in the 5,000-gallon range, and an as-yet undetermined amount reached Walnut Creek.

Crews worked to remove the blockage, temporarily dam the creek, and clean the affected area by flushing the creek with de-chlorinated water, and then pumping the flushing water back to the sewer system.

At approximately 8:30 last night, the line was cleared and functioning normally. Clean-up continued today. The Town reported that no fishkill was observed and efforts are being coordinated with the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

CARY, NC— A sewer overflow near the 1100 block of Buck Jones Road in Cary resulted in an approximately 87,528 gallon spill.
The untreated waste spilled from the manhole and reached Walnut Creek; three dead minnows were found. Crews used about 618,800 gallons of dechlorinated water to flush Walnut Creek; last night’s rain helped accelerate the clean-up and dilute impacts to the creek.
