Cary, NC- Are you concerned about your teen’s exposure to drugs? Or worse, are  you worried you won’t be able to recognize when they may be experimenting with drugs? A seminar being held at the Cary YMCA for you.“Drugs Uncovered: What Parents Need To Know!” is being presented by  the Alice Aycock Poe Center for Health Education (also known as “The Poe Center”) at the Cary  Family YMCA on Wednesday, July 14, 2010 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. During this interactive session parents will learn about current drug and alcohol trends in our community and strategies for equipping  kids with the skills they need to continue to make healthy choices. Most of this information will pertain to children in Middle School and early High School.

One feature of the seminar will be the Wake County Sheriff’s Department’s K-9 Drug Unit.  They will do a demonstration in a mock teenager’s bedroom to uncover the signs of substance abuse, so parents will learn what to look for.

This program is designed for adults only and is recommended for parents/guardians, educators, and counselors. The Poe Center generally gears their presentations to youth health issues. This program is the first program they have done targeted specifically at parents.

Ann Rollins,  CEO Poe Center for Health Education said: “The mission (of The Poe Center)  is to educate pre-K to 12th grade. We know they’re dependent on their family and hence this program is important to help parents learn how to help children avoid using drugs, alcohol and tobacco.”

Prevention will be the main focus. The Center hopes to get this information to parents before their family is exposed to a substance abuse situation. The goal is for everyone to have the “drug-free” conversation with their teens before its too late.
