Cary, NC- “Tengo Famiglia!” is uttered early and often in Over the River and Through the Woods! – The Cary Players’ 26th stage production . The Italian phrase technically means “I have a family!” It sounded to me like it might have meant “Tangled family!” which was probably more appropriate.
In a Nutshell
The story begins when Nick, played by Jason Peck, arrives one Sunday for dinner with his four Italian immigrant grandparents. He has come to tell them he’s been offered a fantastic promotion that means moving to Seattle. This family is closer than close. This is Nick’s conundrum.
While Nick insists that there’s “nothing keeping him here”, the four immediately begin to hatch a plot to “give him a reason to stay”. The four actors (Harvey Sage, Kate Tonner, Bill Spenser, and Annah Michaux), stole my heart (I was recalling my in-laws’ fierce love of their own children).
They concoct a love interest, modeled on their own stories of remembered true love. Enter Caitlin O’Hare, (the lovely Jess Barbour), the unmarried niece of Nick’s grandmother’s Canasta partner. Could a blind date do the trick? Will love conquer all? Despite the additional drama of a false-alarm heart attack and a family member’s cancer diagnosis, Nick does ultimately make his move, and like all extended families, everyone adjusts.
The play will have you laughing uproariously and maye even shedding a few tears.
