Cycling: Cary Greenways Ride on Friday

October 20, 2010 | Story by: | Categories: Community, Environment, Featured, Fitness

Cary, NC – Area nonprofits, government leaders, and businesses will put on a bicycle ride from one end of the Triangle to the other this Friday afternoon, October 22nd.

Officially, it’s called the “Raleigh-Durham Cross Triangle Ride,” but since most of it traverses Cary, we changed the title a wee bit. From the organizers:

Connecting two of the Triangle’s leading landmarks, cyclists will bike a total of 39 miles from the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park lawn. Along a route that is mostly off-road and separated from car traffic, participants will be celebrating trail progress in the region and calling on elected leaders to close the few gaps remaining to achieve a family-friendly route that connects Triangle communities for green and healthy commutes and recreation.

The organizers sent along this info as well:

Organizers see the Cross Triangle Greenway as crucial in the local economic recovery process. It will make the region a key tourist hub along the East Coast Greenway that goes all the way from Canada to Key West, Florida. Pittsboro native and East Coast Greenway Alliance Director Dennis Markatos-Soriano remarked that, “We are proud that the construction of this trail can help provide three of the ingredients needed for economic recovery: jobs, low-cost transportation, and lower health costs due to better fitness and improved air quality.”

Recent progress along the American Tobacco Trail and other regional corridors are perfect stepping stones to a united system that brings the Triangle community together. A completed Cross Triangle Greenway will give the region prominence nationally as a leader in sustainable and healthy transportation.
