Health: Should I Be Worried About Low-T?

Cary, NC-  How would you know if you have Low-T? These days, ads for low testosterone levels (Low-T) are running on TV and men are asking their healthcare providers more and more questions about it.

Here’s what you need to know and what you can do about it.

Men & Women

Although Low-T is being directed at men, the reality is that both men and women can be effected.  Most people are surprised to learn that men and women have identical hormones.  Same hormones,  just different amounts and ratios.   Low levels of this naturally occurring hormone can cause problems for both genders.

Common Symptoms of Low-T

  • Depressed mood: feeling sad or blue
  • Diminished physical or work performance
  • Poor concentration and memory
  • Sleep disturbance, increased sleepiness,
  • Increased body fat (belly fat that just won’t go away) or BMI
  • Reduced libido or sexual activity
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Reduced muscle bulk and strength
  • Hot flashes, sweats

Adequate testosterone levels are essential to good health.

Cause

Testosterone decline will happen to all of us. No escaping it.  The most common cause is aging! It is estimated that a male, after the ages of 22-25, loses about 1% of “free testosterone” production ability per year.  That is 10% per decade.

Have your levels checked.   Either a saliva test or the appropriate blood tests can be admisintered.  This is a conversation well worth having with your healthcare provider.

Therapy

Testosterone replacement therapy is done via the oral, transdermal, or intramuscular routes.  Each route of administration has its pros and cons.  In my opinion, the best routes are transdermal (apply to the skin) or intramuscular routes.

Although a healthy balanced food plan (diet) is highly recommended for a multitude of reasons, it can not substitute Testosterone Replacement Therapy.

If you and your doctor decide to use testosterone replacement therapy, keep in mind that all testosterone therapies in the market are NOT created equally!  Each route will have pros and cons. Make sure you are using the method that is right for you and that you are aware of the safe and effective method of administration.  After all, this is about you!
