Review by Jordan Hunt for CaryCitizen.
Cary, NC – The Big Wedding, starring Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon and Katherine Heigl, is a perfectly harmless romantic comedy that is sure to please casual fans of all its leading stars.
I must confess that I had a hard time warming up to The Big Wedding. I certainly enjoy a good romantic comedy – 13 Going on 30 especially still makes me giggle anytime it’s on TV. And The Big Wedding certainly has a cast that can do this kind of movie in their sleep, and thankfully they don’t.
Robert De Niro always seems to enjoy himself when doing comedy and it shows here, and of course Diane Keaton and Susan Sarandon are always easy to watch.
However, the movie doesn’t do much with the rest of its cast. Topher Grace, from That 70s Show has a pretty great set up for his character that could have made for some seriously funny comedy hi-jinks. Instead, the movie barely takes advantage of the joke.
Amanda Seyfried, from Mamma Mia, and Ben Barnes from The Chronicles of Narnia films, star as the couple whose wedding is the center of the movie. Both stars are very likable, but so little time is spent with them to make room for the large cast that it makes it hard to get invested and care about them.
Williams Cameo Superb
One person does take advantage of their limited screen time however, and that is Robin Williams. He plays the priest officiating the wedding and he makes the most of his small part. It’s actually a much more laid back performance than he usually gives, but it’s fitting for the role and he still manages get a few laughs.
Wait For the DVD
The Big Wedding has a likeable cast and is easy enough to watch. If you’re a huge fan of romantic comedies I’m sure you could find more to enjoy here than I did. Even so, I’d say skip it in the theater and at least wait for DVD or cable.
