Cary, NC — If you are like me, your attic is filled with old financial documents taking up space. If you don’t know how to properly dispose of them, let the Town of Cary help you out at their 5th annual Paper Shred Event on Saturday, November 15, 2014.
Four shredding trucks will be revved up on November 15, 2014 to help keep Cary green and your home clutter-free. In support of America Recycles Day, the Town of Cary is hosting its fifth annual paper shred event.
Cary residents can come to the Garmon Operations Center at 400 James Jackson Ave in Cary between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm for free and secure onsite destruction of their sensitive documents. Each person is limited to three boxes of paper, and anyone in line by 1:00 pm will be able to participate. The event is sprinkle or shine.
Proof of Residence Required
Only Cary residents can participate in this event. The Town of Cary’s Environmental Outreach Program Coordinator Sarah Justice explains that,
Because of the event’s increasing popularity, and to ensure we’re servicing Cary residents, this year we’re asking participants to bring some sort of identification—like a driver’s license or utility bill—to verify Cary residency.
Attendance has Doubled
Since the first shred event in 2010, participation in the event has more than doubled, and citizens have brought twice as much paper for shredding and about nine times as much cardboard for recycling.
25,500 Pounds of Paper
Communities across the country have come together each November since 1997 to celebrate America Recycles Day, the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling programs in the United States.
Last year, about 800 citizens participated in Cary’s shred event, keeping 25,500 pounds of paper and 5,000 pounds of cardboard out of the landfill. America Recycles Day is just one of many annual events to help the Town of Cary achieve its 40 percent annual waste diversion goal.
Cary recycling customers who can’t make the event can shred their own paper and place it curbside as part of the Town’s recycling program. For proper disposal, shredded paper should be placed in a clear/transparent plastic bag that is tied closed and placed in your cart at the curb by 7 a.m. on your recycling collection day.
