Popcorn

Recipe: Holiday Popcorn

Popcorn

Cary, NC — Do you need a break from all the Halloween candy? This kid-friendly recipe is perfect for parties, favors, movie nights or anytime snacking.

Holiday Popcorn

Sweet and salty is my favorite combination, and this popcorn recipe is just that.

Holiday popcorn is my own creation – it started out as a quick experiment (I made it one day before I popped in a movie) and turned out to be a huge success. Once you see how easy it is to make and taste how delicious it is, you won’t go back to microwave popcorn.

Perfect for Kids & Parties

The name “Holiday Popcorn” didn’t stick until later on, when I realized that adding a few drops of food coloring to the glaze can make this snack quite festive.

I organized a “Fall Festival” for 20 middle-schoolers at my church last week and whipped up two orange batches of this popcorn in under 10 minutes. They loved the color and devoured it quite quickly. This recipe is definitely a quick, inexpensive snack for parties and other occasions.

Recipe

Makes one big bowl of popcorn (about four servings)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup un-popped popcorn kernels
  • Food coloring (of your choice)
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt

Directions:

  • Cook the popcorn as instructed on its package then transfer to a large bowl.
  • Melt the butter in the microwave or on the stove.
  • Add the sugar, salt and 6-8 drops of food coloring. Whisk well.
  • Pour the glaze over the cooked popcorn and gently toss to distribute the color. If you want to use two colors, divide the glaze and the popcorn and combine them again after mixing.
  • Serve immediately or store, covered, in the fridge for up to 24 hours.

Tips

Store this popcorn in the fridge to keep it crunchy. Divide it into little boxes or bags for party favors, surprises for friends or trick-or-treaters.
