Weekend Events: Theater, Music and Classes

Cary, NC – This weekend promises plenty of events. So whether you want to learn or shop or just have fun, there is something for you in Cary.

Parent Workshops are free classes at the Lucy Daniels Center on Weston Parkway in Cary every first and third Thursday of the month. This is the final class of the series, ideal for parents of children aged six or younger. The classes go from 9:30 to 11 AM.

Best of the B Movies starts this Thursday at the Cary Theater. See famously bad movies such as “The Room,” and “Plan 9 From Outer Space.” The movies play all weekend, starting with “Samurai Cop” and “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes” at 7 and 9 PM respectively.

SummerFest 2016 continues as the North Carolina Symphony plays selections from Beethoven this Thursday and Friday, including Symphony No. 7 and Piano Concert No. 3. Doors open at 5:30 PM.

Friday, June 17, 2016

Start the weekend off with some exercise at Zumba in the Wake Regional Library. Jacque Allen will be teaching a beginner level course for anyone looking to get into the dancing exercise style. The workout starts at 3 PM and registration is required.

Acoustic Nights in the District is free, live outdoor music in front of the Park West 14 Stone Theater. Every Friday and Saturday, starting at 6 PM, come hear music from local artists. This weekend, you can hear Garth Robertson on Friday and Denver Nixon on Saturday.

The Triangle Brass Band are a British-style brass brand and will be playing music from famous movies as part of their “Picture This!” show. This free show is at the Sertoma Amphitheater in Bond Park, starting at 7 PM.

Miles for Medicine is a 5K starting at Fortnight Brewing to benefit MedAssist, which gets medication to people who cannot afford it. There will be bacon, pancakes and beer after the event, which starts at 8:30 AM. Registration is required.

Family Fun Day is an event at Parkside Town Commons with activities for kids, such as a bounce house, face painting, games and more. It goes from 11 AM to 2 PM, near Parkside Town Common’s movie theater.

The Summer Solstice Shopping Soiree is an afternoon of shopping at the Peachy Keen boutique, complete with snacks and sangria, as well as live music. The event goes from noon to 4 PM.

Dean’s Seafood Bar and Grill is holding a Father’s Day Brunch Buffet, with classic breakfast items including plenty of seafood. Reservations are welcome and the buffet is open from 9 AM to 3 PM.

TED Talks at Wake Regional Library are a great way to learn about new ideas and theories and then discuss them with fellow Cary residents. At this talk, you can watch Jane McGonigal’s TED Talk on how video games can improve the world and then discuss, from noon to 2 PM.

Financial Peace Classes are a way to get advice on financial management. They are held by David Ramsey at Genesis United Methodist Church from 2:30 to 4:30 PM.

Around the Triangle

All My Sons is a production by Theater Raleigh of the Arthur Miller play of a real military scandal that resulted in the death of 20 pilots. It is playing all weekend: 8 PM on Friday, 2 and 8 PM on Saturday and 3 PM on Sunday at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts.

Shadowland is a multimedia performance at DPAC, mixing shadow puppetry with circus and live music. Written by the lead writer for “Spongebob Squarepants” and composer David Poe. The main show is at 8 PM on Friday, June 17 but there is also an earlier Matinee without nudity.

And CaryCitizen’s own The Lounge Doctors will be playing at Abbey Road from 9 PM to midnight on Friday, June 17. Come hear the band play a variety of musical styles.
