Weekend Events: Friendship Cup Soccer, Nazim Hikmet Festival and More

Cary, NC – This weekend, there’s a huge soccer event with the NWSL champions the North Carolina Courage playing their first home game of the year combined with the first ever Friendship Cup as NCFC takes on a professional Mexican team. Also, take part in the 11th annual Nazim Hikmet Festival, see a whole show of short plays at the Cary Theater and much more.

The Cary Theater is playing the “20th Annual Animation Show of Shows,” with award winning animated shorts from around the world. The collection of shorts is playing all this weekend, starting at 2 PM this Thursday.

Garden Supply Company is holding its monthly Third Thursday event. Walk through the garden, enjoy light refreshments and enjoy special sales. It starts at 4 PM.

Spring Fling and Fashion is the first annual event by the Women’s Council of Realtors with a fashion show, silent auction, raffles, dancing and more, all at the Women’s Council of Realtors office at 111 Realtors Way in Cary, starting at 7 PM.

Parkside Town Commons is hosting a charity wine walk to benefit Second Chance Pet Adoption. Visitors will get a wine tasting card and can taste a variety of wines at stores around the shopping center – eight stamps enters you into a raffle to win a gift basket. First 100 participants will get a canvas tote bag and it starts at 5 PM.

Comedian Kountry Wayne performs at the Raleigh Improv at Cary’s Parkside Town Commons all this weekend, starting on Friday at both 7:30 and 9:45 PM.

LITE returns for 2019, with a series of funny and engaging one-act plays produced by local playwrights. The show runs this Friday and Saturday at the Cary Theater, starting at 7:30 PM.

The Town of Cary’s Dodgeball Tournament is all day this Saturday, taking place at the Bond Park Community Center. Spectators can watch 15 teams compete and registration and donations go to the Play It Forward Scholarship Fund.

Author Iris Yang speaks at West Regional Library this Saturday, sharing her experiences being raised in China and the inspirations behind her stories “Wings of a Flying Tiger” and “Will of a Tiger.” Pre-registration is requested.

WakeMed Soccer Park hosts a big night of soccer, with the North Carolina Courage playing their first home game of the year against the Orlando Pride, and then North Carolina FC take on the Liga MX team Club Necaxa. The double-header starts at 1 PM.

This Sunday is the 11th annual Nazim Hikmet Poetry Festival in Cary, celebrating the life and legacy of Turkish poet and activist Nâzım Hikmet Ran. The festival includes keynote speakers, poetry readings and awards for the Nâzım Hikmet Poetry Competition. The event, presented by the American-Turkish Association of North Carolina, starts at 1 PM at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center.

West Regional Library is holding a talk on tips for traveling the world safely, efficiently and some ways to help pique interest in international travel. The event is free but pre-registration is requested and it starts at 2 PM.

The Cary Arts Center and the Philharmonic Association Chamber Ensemble present a children’s music and story event, with the musical tales of Rapunzel and the Nanny Goat. The event starts at 3 PM.

Around the Triangle

North Raleigh Arts & Creative Theatre presents “Bonnie and Clyde,” a play based on the story of the early 20th Century crime duo. The live performance runs all this weekend and next weekend, starting at 8 PM.

In anticipation of Hopscotch’s 10th year in Raleigh, there is a kickoff party in Raleigh at R&D Brewing, including live music, vendors, local beers and March Madness events. It runs from 1 to 8 PM on Saturday and it is free to attend.

The Questival Adventure Race is a large scale scavenger hunt in Durham where teams explore the city following clues to collect totems and treasures. There are many prizes to win, worth thousands of dollars collectively. It starts this Friday at 5 PM, starting at Rock Quarry Park in Durham.
