CARY, NC – Inspired by Dixieland, jazz, blues and old-time spirituals, the Mangum and Company Shout Band is bringing its powerful upbeat brand of gospel music to Sertoma Amphitheatre at Bond Park this Saturday, May 8 at 3 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Town of Cary and PineCone, is a non-profit membership organization dedicated to preserving, presenting, and promoting traditional music, dance, and other folk performing arts. Each year PineCone presents 125-150 events, approximately 100 of which are free to the public.

About “Shout” Band Music

“Shout” describes the singing style and form of worship found in some 20th-century African-American religious denominations. Speaking directly to God through the “shout,” black Pentecostals offered the direct experiences and the emotional touch of the Spirit.

“Shout band music is primarily performed as part of church services, parades and religious special occasions, so having the Mangum and Company Shout Band as part of our Sertoma Series is very special,” said Sarah Preston, Performing Arts Coordinator. “Pack a picnic and enjoy this unique opportunity.”

Who are the Mangum Company?

Led by Cedric Mangum, the company features 15-20 members from the Charlotte Mother House of Prayer playing a variety of trombones, sousaphones, baritones and drums. Its mostly instrumental music creates a choir of brass “voices” “singing” in one accord, a tradition from church music of African-American communities in the Southeast during the 1920s. The music is up-tempo and bright.

The Mangum and Company Shout Band appeared under the name The Clouds of Heaven in the first-ever anthology of shout band music produced by Smithsonian “Folkways, Saints Paradise: Trombone Shout Bands from the United House of Prayer (1999)”. Music samples are available for download , use the keywords “Saint’s Paradise.” This concert promises to be something truly special.

In case of rain, the concert will be held at the Kiwanis Shelter in Bond Park.

Remaining 2010 Spring Sertoma Series performances include: SAS Showchoir, VocalMotion on Saturday, May 15, and the Really Terrible Orchestra of the Triangle on Sunday, May 16.

For more information on the Mangum and Company Shout Band, visit Pine Cone

The short story is that CHS didn’t have a physical manifestation of the Imp – no costume, to be exact. But through some clever and creative fund-raising, the new Imp appeared on December 17.

A Wake County deputy was injured early Monday morning when his cruiser was struck by another vehicle during a stop to help a disabled motorist.

Town safest in Southeast and fifth safest large community in America

CARY, NC – Once again, the Town of Cary remains the safest place in the state to live, work, and raise a family, according to a study by CQ Press, publisher of the annual “City Crime Rankings 2009-2010”. Cary is the highest-ranked municipality in North Carolina and in the Southeastern US among the nation’s safest cities overall, a designation that the Town has held for 11 years in a row.

This year, Cary’s overall safety ranking was 19th safest when compared with every community of any size in the report. And Cary has been declared the 5th safest in the nation among municipalities with populations of 100,000 to 499,999. As of October 1, 2009, Cary’s estimated population was 137,483, making it the seventh largest municipality in NC.

“Even though Cary continues to be one of the safest places in the nation, we never lose sight of the fact that each crime we do have forever impacts one of our family, friends, or neighbors,” said Chief Pat Bazemore. “Keeping Cary safe goes hand-in-hand with keeping Cary one of the best places to live, work, and raise a family, which is why we are constantly looking for opportunities to prevent crime from occurring.”

To help keep Cary safe, this summer the Town moved to GeoPolicing, a new approach to community safety that enables officers to become experts on the needs, issues, and concerns of the people within the specific areas they serve. Police officers once assigned to beats across 55+ square miles are now focused on becoming part of and protecting a single district.

As of October 31, 2009 Cary’s Part I Crimes were down 16% overall compared to last year. Even so, today’s rankings represent a slight change for Cary over last year, when Cary was ranked the 15th safest overall and the 3rd safest large community in America.”

“One of the things we must never forget is that three Cary women lost their lives last year as a result of domestic violence, and that unprecedented loss didn’t just impact our rankings, it changed our community forever,” added Bazemore.

Cary’s pick as a safe city came in an announcement from CQ Press, a publisher of books, directories, research publications, and Web products on U.S. government, world affairs, and communication. A municipality’s ranking is determined by six basic crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft. All cities with 75,000+ populations that reported crime data to the FBI for the six crime categories were included in the rankings. Final 2008 statistics were used in determining the rankings.

“When it comes to staying safe, we have to credit not only our tremendously talented, dedicated, and professional police team but also our citizens who really are our partners in our tireless and unending focus on addressing crime,” added Bazemore.

Additional information on these awards is available from CQ Press or by calling (202) 729-1846.
