Story by Lindsey Chester. Illustration by Jerry Miller.

Cary,NC – Are you a long time Cary resident? By that I mean, have you lived here longer than 30 years? If so you may have some documents that could be of interest to the Town of Cary and the Friends of Page-Walker.

The Friends of Page-Walker Preservation Committee, in partnership with the Town of Cary, is hunting for plans and architectural drawings of subdivisions and homes from the 1950′s and 1960′s. That’s a time when Cary counted our residents at less than 10,000!

In particular they seek plans drawn by the hand of long time resident Jerry Miller (story). Miller is known to have designed homes in the Greenwood, Pine Valley and Meadowmont subdivisions, among others.

Town Funded Project

These plans and drawings will become part of the inventory collected for the Town of Cary-funded Historic Resources Survey and Inventory Update project. Thirty thousand dollars has been allocated to complete this project.

The project goals are to 1) update information about Cary properties listed in the existing Wake County Architectural and Historic Inventory, and 2) add additional Cary properties to the Inventory by surveying and identifying important properties throughout the town that are over 50 years old and have never been documented.

Basically, the Preservation Committee is looking to identify properties that may be of historical or architectural importance. These will be added to the Town’s Historic Preservation Master Plan which provides a road map for preservation policies and activities over the next 10 years through a series of goals, objectives and recommended actions.

The project began in August 2011 and will be completed in late spring of 2012. The Town has retained Circa, Inc., a Raleigh cultural resources consulting firm, to perform the survey and inventory update.

Who to Contact

Citizens who have or know about the requested plans and drawings can contact:

Ellen Turco at Circa, Inc. at
(919) 219-1489
eturco@circa-inc.com.

Now, go search through your attics and closets to see if you possess any of these antique treasures!

Cary, NC - Mountain Aires’ music (and their name) comes straight from the highlands of Ireland, Scotland and Appalachia. The band is based in Wake County and will perform at Page-Walker Arts and History Center this Sunday as part of their Winter Concert Series. Band Influences

Over time the band has developed its own unique style, drawing from the music of artists such as Ricky Scaggs, the Kentucky Thunder, Earl Scruggs, Doyle Dikes, Eileen Ivers, and Mew (to name a few), that sets it apart from others and clearly defines it as Mountain Aires music.

A Bunch of Wake County Kids

The band features Benjamin Tangeman (guitar) and his younger brother Cort (hammered dulcimer); Zachary Simmons (mandolin); Sam Cox (fiddle); Sammy Dallas (banjo); and teacher Marvin Heath (guitar). Three of the group’s members find themselves under the tutelage of Heath, a Trans World Radio missionary who writes and composes original music.

While the Mountain Aires began as a simple venture of fun and Christian fellowship, the young men continued to hone their skills, quickly realizing an ability to produce quality music that resonates with a wide range of listeners. Grounded in their faith and music, the band members call themselves “shameless antiquarians” and now exist to play their music with all their hearts Soli Deo Gloria – ”to the glory of God alone”.

The band started as a group of five young home-schooled boys in Wake County, North Carolina. The their debut studio recording was titled Echo the Legacy. The album is a melding of bluegrass, old-time, gospel, Celtic and Appalachian folk songs plus two original tracks.

Two years after Echo the Legacy was released, Mountain Aires, now with a more refined and dynamic sound, released its second album, Christmas, in November of 2008. Christmas reflects the musical maturity that the band developed from the past four years of playing together.

Cary, NC – Did you ever attend or teach at the Old Cary Elementary or the Cary Colored School? The Old Cary High School? How’s your memory?

While construction workers are busy renovating Old Cary Elementary School to become a new community arts center, Town of Cary historians have launched preservation efforts to collect stories, photographs and memorabilia from the school’s long history.

During upcoming Memory Day events, the Town is asking alumni and faculty to come forward and share their memories from Old Cary Elementary School, Old Cary High School and Cary Colored School.

The first Memory Day was on October 16. Another one is coming up on October 30, from 1-4 p.m. at Cary Senior Center.

All memories shared will become part of the permanent archive with the Friends of Page-Walker Arts & History Center and shared at various events throughout 2011.

Additionally, select stories will be included in Time Warp!, a performance by Cary’s Applause! Youth Theatre based on 100 years of oral histories from the schools.

Cary, N.C. - The Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel have announced this years Winter Concert Series. Always popular (and always sold out), season tickets are still available but going fast.

Winter Concert Series

The series kicks off on Sunday, October 17 and it looks like we are in for another season of eclectic and outstanding programs.

All performances, with the exception of Love Bits & Bites, will be held on Sunday afternoons at 4:00 PM at The Page-Walker Arts & History Center, 119 Ambassador Loop—in the Heart of Cary. The Main Gallery of the Page-Walker Arts & History Center is the perfect intimate setting to showcase all of the uniquely talented and diverse artists who will be performing this year.

Sunday, October 17: Classical Interlude – Solo, Duet & Ensemble

This concert will feature performances by: Eric Dyke, North Carolina Symphony Double Bass Player; McHenry Horns, Bill and Matthew McHenry who are father and son French horn players from Cary (Matthew is at Green Hope High School); and the Raleigh Civic Symphony and Chamber Orchestra Ensemble players.

Sunday, November 21: Little Windows (Mark Weems and Julee Glaub)

Little Windows, returning for a second appearance at the Winter Concert Series, creates a mix of Appalachian and Irish music, and traditionally-based originals, with a special focus placed on unaccompanied ballads. Mark Weems and Julee Glaub tour together nationally and abroad with a focus on the art of the pure voice with tight harmonies in traditional songs. Instrumentation includes guitar, fiddle, banjo, flute, piano and bodhrán.

Sunday, December 19: Mountain Aires

Mountain Aires is a group of young acoustic musicians from Wake County, North Carolina. Their award-winning style reflects a mature sense of creativity, beauty and excitement. The group plays a unique blend of traditional acoustic music, including bluegrass, Celtic, folk, old-time and holiday tunes.

Sunday, January 16: Brian Reagin (Carole J. Wright Memorial Concert)

Brian Reagin, noted violinist and Concertmaster of the North Carolina Symphony, returns as a crowd favorite to the Winter Concert Series. Reagin, who captivated audiences with his brilliant performance at both the 2007 and 2008 Winter Concert Series, will treat concert-goers to a classical repertoire on his Lorenzo and Tomasso Carcassi violin made in Florence, Italy in 1763.

Sunday, February 20: Cary Players’ Love Bits & Bites 2011 – The Sixth Sense

A favorite Cary Players holiday tradition, this sixth-annual production of the PG-13 Valentine’s Day show Love Bits & Bites is an all-new collection of scenes, one-acts and songs that celebrate the charm, magic and mystery of love (sometimes bitter, sometimes sweet, often funny). Two acts on each of two floors of the Page-Walker Arts & History Center will be performed. The audience will change floors at intermission (after enjoying mouth-watering complimentary chocolate confections and coffee)!

The Friends anticipate that they will sell out quickly. Concert patrons are encouraged to purchase their season tickets as early as possible to ensure their seat at each of these events.

Cary, NC- Herbfest was a big hit with the public on Saturday, with perfect weather for the first-ever event. I went early with my 10 year old daughter, Emma.

Sponsored by the Friends of Page Walker, the festival was held on the grounds of the Page-Walker Arts and History Center in their beautiful gardens with everything in bloom.

The idea was to bring together citizen gardeners, professional plant and herb growers, horticultural experts and homesteaders for education, inspiration, commerce and fun. The pleasure of growing things in your garden and serving them on your table is both edible and spiritual.

Local artists and vendors were invited to share their offerings in the big garden behind the old hotel. I was taken with a Karen Dillard, of Dillardville, who creates birdhouses using reclaimed wood, and another seller who made homemade natural soaps in her kitchen.

There were fun things for the kids including the Cary Teen Council volunteers who painted Emma’s face for free. Under a tent in the shade, a musical combo was playing some cool music.

I met Erin DiDiano, the president of the Herb Society of Wake County and Lisa Treadaway who owns The Little Herb House in Southern Wake. Lisa not only grows and sells herbs, but also teaches culinary and medicinal courses using the herbs from her garden.

Lisa Treadaway who owns the Herb House in Southern Wake County

It was a beautiful event on a perfect day. I learned a few things, bought something and came away with renewed enthusiasm for my garden. Everyone in the crowd seemed to share my feeling.

I’m looking forward to watching Herbfest grow next year!

Cary, North Carolina – We’ve received quite a few emails about our new gardening column. Basically, we cover what’s looking good in the ground this week. Over time, our goal is to create a complete picture of the gardening cycle in Cary.

Right now, our gardens are making a (somewhat hasty) transition from spring to summer plants. The recent hot, dry weather has accelerated this process. My pansies are still looking good, but their days are numbered. Rosemary is growing like crazy and the lavender is setting up to bloom.

A Most Vigorous Plant

The most striking thing I saw this week was a stand of yarrow (Achillea millefolium) in front of the Page-Walker Center. Flat, bright, yellow flowers topped strong 2-3 foot stalks with deeply cut, feathery leaves. Yarrow has a weedy look, but many fancy varieties have been isolated by breeders.

My experience is that yarrow is a vigorous plant. That’s what they say in garden catalogs when the plant tends to grow like crazy and choke out everything else in bed. I pulled mine out two years ago. Still pulling it out today. It likes to hide and won’t give up. Vigorous, indeed.

But yarrow makes a fine display and is useful and decorative in its own bed or a container. From Botanical.com:

Legend tells us it is the same plant with which Achilles stanched the bleeding wounds of his soldiers, hence the name of the genus, Achillea. In Sweden it is called ‘Field Hop’ and has been used in the manufacture of beer. Linnaeus considered beer thus brewed more intoxicating than when hops were used.

Starlings use yarrow to line their nests. It’s happy in poor soil and is drought tolerant. It can be useful to control erosion.

Check it Out at Herbfest

Go see what I’m talking about this weekend at the first ever Friends of Page-Walker Herbfest, Saturday May 15 from 9AM to 2 PM at Page-Walker. Free event.

The gardens look fantastic and the weather promises to be mild.

Taken last week in the garden behind the Page-Walker Center.
CARY, NC – Each May, the Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel examine Cary’s historic properties and report their status to the greater community in a program entitled “What Have We Got to Lose?” This year’s event is scheduled for Tuesday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center.

Preserving Town History

In what promises to be an engaging and educational evening, this year’s program will showcase properties in Cary’s three historic districts, as well as “structures with stories” – buildings in Cary that have historical significance because of the people associated with them, and the “inside scoop” about those structures that long-time Cary residents have shared.

Highlights of this popular annual presentation include a description of the historic and architectural significance of the properties by Members of the Friends’ Historic Preservation Committee, as well as notable tidbits about former owners and their place in Cary’s history. The program also laments the loss of certain properties, such as the Barbee-Williams Farm and the Sears Farm, among others.

“As we present our annual inventory, we draw on the importance of safeguarding the heritage of Cary’s historic districts,” said Bob Myers of the Friends’ Historic Preservation Committee. “The Friends’ objective for the evening is to enlighten our citizens that there is much to save, but also much that could be lost.”

Friends of Page-Walker Programs

The Friends of the Page-Walker present four programs each year in the Historic Preservation Series. The programs—which are free and open to the public—start at 7:30 p.m. and are held at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center, 119 Ambassador Loop, on the Town Hall Campus. Light refreshments are served following each program. Attendees are encouraged to stay to continue the conversation and make new friends.

The Historic Preservation Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Page-Walker Arts & History Center. To learn more, contact Bob Myers at (919) 254-1476 or bob.myers@friendsofpagewalker.org.

The Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel is an all-volunteer, non-profit, membership organization whose mission is to enrich the community by serving as a guardian for the Page-Walker Arts and History Center, by advocating preservation of Cary historical sites, archiving history and facilitating history education, and promoting cultural arts. For membership information, contact Peggy Van Scoyoc at (919) 461-0443 or president@friendsofpagewalker.org.

Cary, NC-Now that spring has fully arrived in Cary, and with summer just around the corner, gardeners are out in force planning and planting their warm-weather gardens. There is no better way to get started than by attending The Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel’s first annual Herbfest on Saturday May 15th beginning at 9am.

Held on the grounds of the Page-Walker Arts & History Center, this free event promises something for everyone – from the most seasoned garden enthusiasts to anyone looking to turn their thumbs green. Cary Teen Council volunteers will provide hands-on activities for the kids, too!

What To Expect:

Tour the Page-Walker Garden, watch herb cooking demonstrations and stroll through booths selling a wide variety of herbs, crafts and garden products. Live musical entertainment will be provided throughout the event by Chris Anderson and Gail Leonard, as well as a talented jazz trio from Enloe High School.

While there is no charge to attend the event, any proceeds from the sale of Page-Walker memorabilia will benefit the Friends’ ongoing historic preservation, educational and archival efforts

“We’re thrilled with the enthusiastic response we’ve received to Herbfest,” said Friends’ President Peggy Van Scoyoc. “We’re anticipating a large turnout for this inaugural event. As home gardening continues to grow in popularity, we believe our annual Herbfest event will as well.”

Include: Bela Imports, Chatham Street Café, Dillardville Bird Houses, Garden Supply Company, Eva Green, Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve, J & M Garden Art, Bonnie King Soaps, The Little Herb House, The Meat House, The Thyme Savor, Wake County Herb Society, Natalie Winters and Whole Foods.

Theme:

Gardening and native plants and the contribution these pursuits make to a healthy lifestyle.

How Did Herbfest Get Started?

The seed for Herbfest was planted during a March 2009 program entitled “Down the Garden Path: An Historical Exploration of Herbs and Their Traditional Uses,” which was part of the Friends’ Historic Preservation Program Series. The popularity of that program, coupled with an increasing number of requests for tours of the Page Educational Garden and interest in the historical use of herbs, prompted the Friends to host Herbfest.

Learn More About the Friends of Page-Walker Organization

In addition to showcasing the Page-Walker Arts & History Center and its beautiful grounds, the event will also raise visibility of the “Friends” organization and its mission. The Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel, is an all-volunteer, non-profit, membership organization whose mission is to enrich the community by serving as a guardian for the Page-Walker Arts and History Center, by advocating preservation of Cary historical sites, archiving history and facilitating history education, and promoting cultural arts.

Herbfest will be held – rain or shine – on Saturday, May 15 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Visitors will have many opportunities to find out all they need to know about starting an herb garden by touring the Page Educational Garden, including a close-up look at the historic 1850’s Page smokehouse.
