Cary, NC- Ever wondered who regulates the Town traffic signals? What the water treatment plant looks like? How land uses are decided for future development? These  questions (and many more) are answered  during the free course known as the  Town of Cary School of Government.

I took part in this enlightening course myself over a year ago and was amazed at the size and organization of the Town of Cary. The class took field trips to the water treatment plant at Jordan Lake, we also went inside the base of a water tower. We visited the Public Works facility on James Jackson and saw how town traffic signs are created. We even got the opportunity to operate   the arm on the one man garbage truck (Thank You Scott Hecht- see related story about his promotion)! In some sessions we worked in small groups with hypothetical situations mirroring those that the Town Council must debate. One session involved the revitalization efforts  for Cary’s downtown. Another session looked at an area similar to the area bordering Jordan Lake. In this scenario we tried to locate where different commercial and residential densities belonged and debated why certain areas should be left open space and others low density residential.

This course is perfect for anyone who would like to know more about the workings of the town, and perhaps one day volunteer to be on a board or hold office.
